Power Notetaking

  • Developed by Cornell University;
  • Taught in Teacher Education courses;
  • Works with lectures or reading;
  • Promotes critical thinking;
  • Focuses on mastery;
  • Provides instant feedback;
  • Demonstrates effort;
  • Allows for frequent review;
  • Permits effective last-minute review; and
  • Yields better grades!
This report describes how to take notes using this system. Please recognize that taking notes that look like these won't magically create better grades: education is not automatic! But if a student applies himself or herself to this system, better grades are as guaranteed as anything in education can be!

To the Parent:

If your student uses this method, you'll be able to instantly see his or her effort (that is, how hard he or she is working) and his or her progress (how successful he or she is with the material). Your time together will change from "How's your homework coming? / OK" to "Show me what you've done / See? / Wow."

To the Student:

Using this system and working with your parents in the process will astonish and delight them: seeing a sone or daughter who is actively learning is a real reward to a homeschooling parent. By itself, this won't get you anything - but if you know that your parents are thrilled with your efforts, it really does make a difference in how YOU progress through the course.

An Extra Hour of Study - Painlessly!

  • A simple trick to recapture lost moments during the day;
  • Focuses on material still yet-to-be-learned;
  • Provides for later review of all material;
  • Capitalizes on the recognized "spaced review" principle;
  • Structured to best prepare students for exams;
  • This is one of the critical tricks Mr. Stephenson used to outscore 85% of the people taking the Medical College Admissions Test - and to outscore 99% of them on the Physics section!
